  1. The style and composition throughout the film harks back to Goddard. The use of cameras, the music, and the subject matter was all incredibly similar as well.

  2. There were definitely similarities, especially in the references and look of the film. One can definitely tell that Goddard inspired A Variety of Mysteries. However, there did seem to be some unique elements as well. For example, A Variety of Mysteries I felt had more hints of quirky humor and a more relaxed take compared to Goddard's more serious, artistic compositions.

  3. Even down to the edits and usage of color you can see the inspiration. It's certainly different, but similar enough to draw a lot of specific references.

  5. I’d say there’s as much of Jacques Rivette in the film as Godard, with perhaps a dash of Rohmer and a pinch of Chantal Akerman, but yeah, the movie has no lack of JLG references, one in particular was intended as a very obvious homage. Maybe if the film were in French with English subtitles people would like it more… or less. What do I know?

    Cheers!
